"Teacher, which secondary schools are good for Chinese?" is the second-most common question I get from P5 and P6 parents, right after "what score does my child need?". Singapore has eleven Special Assistance Plan (SAP) secondary schools — the schools MOE set up to deliver a bilingual, bicultural education in a Chinese-language-rich environment. Yet most families can name three or four, and almost nobody knows which ones run the Chinese Language Elective Programme, which are Integrated Programme only, or that one of them is moving campus in January 2027.

This guide puts all eleven on one page, grouped by region and listed alphabetically within each region — it is not a league table, and I have deliberately not ordered schools by score. For each school you get the location and nearest MRT, the type and track, the indicative PSLE score range from the January 2026 posting as shown on MOE SchoolFinder, what the school actually does with Chinese, a sense of its culture and recent events, and the Chinese-related talent areas it accepted DSA applications for in 2026. PSLE 2026 results are expected on 24–25 November (SEAB's tentative dates), so if your child is in P6, read this before results week. If your child is in P5, the last section is for you.

⚠️ How to read the score ranges — please read this first

Every range below is the one MOE SchoolFinder shows as the school's PSLE Score Range for the previous year's posting (students who entered Sec 1 in January 2026). The first number is the best score admitted and the second is the cut-off point (COP) — the score of the last student posted in. A letter after a number — (D), (M) or (P) — is the Higher Chinese grade (Distinction, Merit, Pass) used as a tie-break at SAP schools: 8(M) means the last student admitted had PSLE Score 8 and Merit in HCL, so a student on 8 with only a Pass or no HCL would have missed out. MOE's own wording: the range "serves only as a reference", COPs "can fluctuate by a few points year-on-year", and the range is "not pre-determined before the posting". Check the live page at moe.gov.sg/schoolfinder before any decision — our figures were compiled in early October 2026 and SchoolFinder is the only authoritative source.

1. What "SAP School" Actually Means for Admission

The Special Assistance Plan began in 1979 with nine Chinese-medium secondary schools; Nan Hua High joined in 2000 and Nan Chiau High in January 2012, making eleven. MOE describes SAP schools as aiming "to deliver a bilingual and bicultural education through a learning environment steeped in Chinese culture and language", and gives them additional resources (about $300 per student a year, per a 2019 parliamentary reply) for Chinese-language programmes. Four admission rules follow directly from MOE's Secondary 1 posting pages:

  • Your child must have taken Chinese at PSLE. Students who offered Chinese (or Higher Chinese) as their Mother Tongue may opt for SAP schools; students of other Mother Tongues cannot.
  • Higher Chinese in primary school is NOT required to apply. MOE states this explicitly — a child who took standard Chinese can still choose a SAP school.
  • Once posted, Chinese is compulsory. Students in SAP schools must take Higher Chinese or Chinese, so they can take part in the school's Chinese programmes. Several SAP schools strongly encourage HCL for everyone who meets the criteria, and Nan Chiau High states that all its students read Higher Chinese.
  • Higher Chinese gives a posting advantage. If students with the same PSLE Score are competing for the last places in a SAP school, those with better HCL grades — Distinction, then Merit, then Pass — are allocated a place first. This applies to students with a PSLE Score of 14 or better, and it is why the (D)/(M)/(P) letters appear on SAP ranges. A better PSLE Score still wins over a better HCL grade.

💡 Two programmes you will see on school websites

CLEP-Sec — the Chinese Language Elective Programme (Secondary) — is a two-year MOE programme in Sec 3–4 for students with a strong interest in Chinese language and literature: a local camp, a one- to two-week overseas immersion at the end of Sec 3, author sessions and writing competitions, with a scholarship attached (a $1,000 annual allowance plus school-fee support). Entry needs at least A2 in Chinese or B3 in Higher Chinese at the Sec 2 exams. MOE runs it in nine schools, eight of which are SAP schools. BSP-Sec — the Bicultural Studies Programme — is a four-year programme from Sec 3 to JC2 about contemporary China and the West; entry needs at least B3 in both Higher Chinese and English at Sec 2, and BSP students must offer Higher Chinese. Six SAP schools run BSP-Sec. Neither programme is chosen at P6 — your child qualifies for it in Sec 2 — but the school you pick decides which door exists.

2. The Map: Eleven Schools, Four Regions

Alphabetical within each region. "COP" is the non-affiliated cut-off from the January 2026 posting; the full range, and the affiliated range where one exists, is in each school's card below.

Notice what the table does NOT contain: a school in the north (Woodlands, Yishun, Sembawang). Families in the north have the longest journeys to any of the eleven — Nan Chiau (Sengkang) and the Bishan–Ang Mo Kio pair are the nearest — and travel time becomes a real factor — a Sec 1 student doing CCA until 6pm and then an hour home is a four-year decision, not a one-day one.

3. Central — Bukit Timah and Bishan–Ang Mo Kio

Catholic High School 公教中学 — Bishan

A Catholic boys' school founded in 1935 by the French missionary Fr Edward Becheras, who described his school as "a way made of two rails — Chinese and English". That sentence still describes it: assemblies and cultural life carry a strong Chinese flavour, and the school's whole-school programme is literally called Bilingual and Bicultural Education.

  • 📍 Location: 9 Bishan Street 22 — a few minutes' walk from Bishan MRT (North-South and Circle lines). Moved to Bishan in 1992.
  • 🏫 Type & track: Government-aided, autonomous SAP boys' school with two tracks since 2013: a four-year O-Level programme and the Joint Integrated Programme (with CHIJ St Nicholas Girls' and Singapore Chinese Girls' School), whose students go on to Eunoia Junior College for Years 5–6. Affiliated primary: Catholic High School (Primary).
  • 📊 Jan 2026 posting score range: IP 4(D)–7(M). O-Level (Posting Group 3) cut-off 8(M) for non-affiliated students and 12 for affiliated students — the lower bounds of the O-Level ranges differed between the mirrors we checked, so read them off SchoolFinder directly.
  • 🀄 Chinese focus: MOE Bicultural Studies Programme (continues at Eunoia JC); school-wide 双语双文化教育 programme; Chinese Orchestra and Wushu as cultural anchors. Not one of the CLEP-Sec schools.
  • 🏮 Culture & recent events: Motto 亲爱忠诚 · 敬业乐群. In 2024 its team was runner-up at the Hanyu Qiao (汉语桥) World Secondary School Chinese Competition and won the National Student Chinese–English Interpretation Competition; the Chinese Drama Society stages an annual production. In 2026 the school hosted the quarter-finals of the National Secondary Schools Chinese Debate Competition.
  • 🎯 DSA talent areas linked to Chinese (2026 exercise): Bilingualism (IP) and Chinese Drama, per the 2026 DSA talent lists; confirm the full list on the school's DSA page.

CHIJ St Nicholas Girls' School 圣尼各拉女校 — Ang Mo Kio

The only Chinese-medium school in the CHIJ family, and a SAP school since 1979. Its school song is sung in Chinese and its flagship programme is built, in the school's words, on "the traditional Chinese disciplines of Language and Literature, History and Philosophy". Of the four Central schools it has the widest O-Level affiliated range, which matters a great deal if your daughter is in St Nicholas Primary.

  • 📍 Location: 501 Ang Mo Kio Street 13 — about a 10-minute walk from Ang Mo Kio MRT (North-South line). On this site since 1985.
  • 🏫 Type & track: Government-aided SAP Catholic girls' school with an O-Level track and the Joint Integrated Programme (from 2013, with Catholic High and SCGS; IP students proceed to Eunoia JC). Affiliated primary: CHIJ St Nicholas Girls' School (Primary).
  • 📊 Jan 2026 posting score range: IP 4(D)–7(M). O-Level (Posting Group 3) cut-off 8(M) non-affiliated and 14 affiliated. One third-party table we saw gave very different numbers for this school, which looked like a mis-aligned row — verify on SchoolFinder.
  • 🀄 Chinese focus: SAP Flagship Bilingual-Bicultural programme; MOE Bicultural Studies Programme since 2015 (with immersion of up to eight weeks in China or Southeast Asia and up to two weeks in a Western country over four years); a China Immersion Programme, a Translation programme and cultural camps. Not one of the CLEP-Sec schools.
  • 🏮 Culture & recent events: Motto 德纯义坚 — "Simple in Virtue, Steadfast in Duty" — with an ethos the school itself describes as drawing on Confucian values. In 2026 it hosted the preliminary round of the National Secondary Schools Chinese Debate Competition.
  • 🎯 DSA talent areas linked to Chinese (2026 exercise): Bilingualism — "outstanding performance in both English and Chinese" evidenced by results, competitions or published work; the full 2026 criteria are a PDF on the school's DSA page.

Hwa Chong Institution 华侨中学 — Bukit Timah

Founded in 1919 as The Chinese High School by Tan Kah Kee's community, Hwa Chong is the school most parents name first — and the one with the narrowest range in the country. It pioneered the Bicultural Studies Programme in 2005 and also runs CLEP-Sec, so it is one of only three schools where both doors exist.

  • 📍 Location: 661 Bukit Timah Road — Tan Kah Kee MRT (Downtown line) is named after its founder; Exit A leads to Gate 2.
  • 🏫 Type & track: Independent SAP boys' school (Years 1–4) with a co-ed college section; six-year Integrated Programme run jointly with Nanyang Girls' High since 2004, bypassing O-Levels. No affiliated primary school.
  • 📊 Jan 2026 posting score range: IP 4(D)–6(M). There is no affiliated range (no primary affiliate) and no O-Level track.
  • 🀄 Chinese focus: Pioneer BSP school (2005) and one of the nine CLEP-Sec schools; upper-secondary immersion with partner schools in China; the Chinese Society 华文学会 runs drama, calligraphy and debate; the Chinese Drama Club is one of the school's flagship programmes and the Chinese Orchestra dates from 1985.
  • 🏮 Culture & recent events: Motto 自强不息 (from the Book of Changes — tireless self-improvement), paired with 己立立人,己达达人. The school hosts and co-organises the National Chinese Riddle Competition 全国中学生灯谜比赛 (4th edition May 2025, 5th edition May 2026, both at Hwa Chong) and was a finalist in the 2025 全国华文大比拼 secondary final.
  • 🎯 DSA talent areas linked to Chinese (2026 exercise): Chinese Language (IP), Bilingualism (IP) and Chinese Orchestra, plus Chinese Weiqi and Wushu as cultural CCAs.

Nanyang Girls' High School 南洋女子中学校 — Bukit Timah

Founded in 1917 to promote Chinese education for women, Nanyang Girls' turns 110 in 2027. It is Hwa Chong's IP partner and, like Hwa Chong, runs both BSP (since 2005) and CLEP-Sec (since 2020). It is also the co-organiser of the largest Chinese-language knowledge competition in Singapore — which tells you something about how central Chinese is to the school's identity.

  • 📍 Location: 2 Linden Drive — about a kilometre's walk or a short bus ride from Sixth Avenue MRT (Downtown line).
  • 🏫 Type & track: Independent SAP girls' school; six-year Integrated Programme with Hwa Chong Institution since 2004 (Years 5–6 at Hwa Chong's college section). SchoolFinder shows an affiliated range, reflecting its primary affiliate (Nanyang Primary School).
  • 📊 Jan 2026 posting score range: IP 4(D)–6(M) non-affiliated; 4(D)–8(M) affiliated. No O-Level track.
  • 🀄 Chinese focus: Pioneer BSP school (2005), CLEP-Sec since 2020, and a Languages & Humanities talent-development track. Co-organiser with SPH Chinese Media Group of the National Chinese Challenge 全国华文大比拼 since 2014 (13th edition in 2026: over 3,000 students from 162 schools); hosted the finals and awards of the 2026 National Chinese Reading Competition 全国中小学华文阅读乐竞赛.
  • 🏮 Culture & recent events: Motto 勤慎端朴 (Diligence, Prudence, Respectability, Simplicity). Runner-up in the 2025 全国华文大比拼 secondary final; SYF 2025 Distinctions in guzheng, Chinese orchestra and Chinese drama; the 「声动南洋:百十回响」 showcase and Nanyang Festival of Arts 2026 lead up to the 110th anniversary.
  • 🎯 DSA talent areas linked to Chinese (2026 exercise): Bilingualism; under Aesthetics — Chinese Calligraphy, Chinese Dance, Chinese Orchestra, Guzheng Ensemble, Lion and Dragon Dance. No stand-alone "Chinese Language" area.

4. East — Tanjong Rhu, Katong, Bedok and Mount Vernon

Anglican High School 圣公会中学 — Bedok / Tanah Merah

Founded in 1956 by five Chinese-speaking Anglican congregations — Singapore's first Anglican secondary school with Chinese as the medium — Anglican High is the SAP school parents in the far east most often overlook. Its own FAQ is unusually clear about the SAP rules (every student offers Higher Chinese or Chinese; the HCL posting advantage applies), which makes it a good school to read up on even if you end up elsewhere.

  • 📍 Location: 600 Upper Changi Road — about five minutes' walk from Tanah Merah MRT (East-West line); served by buses 2, 9, 12, 14, 24, 25, 31, 35, 38, 45, 46, 47, 48, 222 and 506.
  • 🏫 Type & track: Government-aided, autonomous, co-ed SAP school; four-year O-Level programme (Posting Group 3). No affiliated primary school; affiliated to St Andrew's Junior College.
  • 📊 Jan 2026 posting score range: Posting Group 3: 4–12 (the school's own FAQ states "4 to 12 for the 2026 Sec 1 cohort"). For context, the school lists earlier ranges of 5(M)–11(M) for 2025 and 6(M)–12(M) for 2024 — a reminder that cut-offs move.
  • 🀄 Chinese focus: One of the nine CLEP-Sec schools, with the one- to two-week overseas immersion at the end of Sec 3; the four-year whole-school ACE Programme (Anglican High Chinese Experience) covering language, culture and values; Chinese Drama Society and a Chinese Orchestra the school says has achieved top SYF honours.
  • 🏮 Culture & recent events: Motto 圣洁公义 (Holiness and Righteousness) — a Christian ethos layered on a Chinese-community heritage. The school celebrated its 70th anniversary with a dinner on 25 July 2026 at which Education Minister Desmond Lee spoke; its 65th in 2021 was marked by then-Education Minister Lawrence Wong.
  • 🎯 DSA talent areas linked to Chinese (2026 exercise): Chinese Language (under Language & Humanities), Chinese Drama and Chinese Orchestra, plus Wushu.

Chung Cheng High School (Main) 中正中学(总校) — Goodman Road, Katong

A pre-war Chinese-medium school (1939) whose entrance arch and administration building were gazetted as Singapore's 66th National Monument in 2014, with the campus lake 中正湖 as its landmark. It is the only SAP school in the east with no primary affiliate at all, which means every place is open — and a co-ed O-Level school with a cut-off of 10(M) is, for many families, the realistic Chinese-focus option.

  • 📍 Location: 50 Goodman Road — between Dakota MRT (Circle line) and Tanjong Katong MRT (Thomson-East Coast line); buses along Dunman Road and Tanjong Katong Road.
  • 🏫 Type & track: Government-aided, autonomous (since 1996), co-ed SAP school; four-year O-Level track admitting from Posting Group 3 only. No affiliated primary school; affiliated junior college: Nanyang JC. Do not confuse it with its sister school Chung Cheng High School (Yishun), which is not a SAP school.
  • 📊 Jan 2026 posting score range: Posting Group 3: 5(D)–10(M). No affiliated range (no primary affiliate).
  • 🀄 Chinese focus: One of the nine CLEP-Sec schools — at Chung Cheng the programme is offered to Sec 3–4 students taking Chinese Literature; a school-run Bicultural Education Programme with overseas immersion in China for selected Sec 2 and 3 students; Chinese Orchestra, Chinese Drama, and Chinese Calligraphy & Brush Painting as CCAs. Not one of the BSP-Sec schools.
  • 🏮 Culture & recent events: Philosophy 有教无类; values 好学 · 力行 · 知耻 · 自强. The 85th anniversary in 2024 brought about 1,000 alumni to a 「中正八五,弦歌不辍」 homecoming lunch with Minister Chan Chun Sing; the Zhulin Building and Grand Auditorium were upgraded from 2023, and Minister Desmond Lee spoke at the Chung Cheng–Nanyang JC anniversary celebrations on 5 July 2025; "Lake Odyssey 2026: Echoes by the Lake" was staged on 30 May 2026.
  • 🎯 DSA talent areas linked to Chinese (2026 exercise): Chinese Language and Chinese Orchestra (both girls and boys), plus Wushu. Chinese Drama is a CCA but not a DSA area.

Dunman High School 德明政府中学 — Tanjong Rhu

The name 德明 comes from 《大学》, a Confucius statue stands on campus, and the motto is explicitly Confucian — this is the school that won the 2025 National Chinese Challenge secondary title. It is Integrated Programme only (the six-year Dunman High Programme since 2005), so there is no O-Level route in, and no affiliated primary school. 2026 is its 70th year.

  • 📍 Location: 10 Tanjong Rhu Road — Tanjong Rhu and Katong Park stations (Thomson-East Coast line) and Stadium (Circle line) are all within about 800 metres.
  • 🏫 Type & track: Autonomous co-ed SAP school running a six-year Integrated Programme only, leading to A-Levels in its own Senior High. No O-Level track; no affiliated primary. Not to be confused with Dunman Secondary School in Tampines, which is a different, non-SAP school with very different ranges.
  • 📊 Jan 2026 posting score range: IP: 4(D)–8(M). No affiliated range.
  • 🀄 Chinese focus: One of the six BSP-Sec schools and one of the nine CLEP-Sec schools (its 2025 CLEP immersion went to Beijing); an in-house Chinese Language Talent Development Programme covering debate, creative writing, public speaking and translation across Junior and Senior High; the Dunman High Chinese Orchestra, founded 1973, has over 200 members and the school says it has received the highest SYF accolade at every edition since inception.
  • 🏮 Culture & recent events: Motto 诚 · 信 · 勇 · 忠 (Honesty, Trustworthiness, Moral Courage, Loyalty). Champion of the 2025 全国华文大比拼 secondary division (12th edition, about 2,700 participants); the 65th anniversary in 2021 was attended by DPM Heng Swee Keat.
  • 🎯 DSA talent areas linked to Chinese (2026 exercise): Bilingualism (girls and boys — "relevant achievements in Chinese and English"; successful applicants join the Chinese Language Talent Development Programme in Years 1–2 and then BSP or CLEP), Chinese Orchestra, and Chinese Dance (girls).

Maris Stella High School 海星中学 — Mount Vernon — moving to Bedok North in 2027

Singapore's only school founded by the Marist Brothers (1958), and a "full school" with its own SAP primary section — which gives it a distinctive ten-year Chinese programme, 走近文化 in primary leading to 走进文化 in secondary. Important for this year's P6 cohort: the secondary section relocates to 20 Jalan Damai (the former Bedok North Secondary site) from January 2027 while the Mount Vernon campus is rebuilt, returning tentatively in 2029. Your child would spend most or all of Sec 1–4 in Bedok North, not Bartley.

  • 📍 Location: 25 Mount Vernon Road, near Bartley MRT (Circle line) — until December 2026. From January 2027: 20 Jalan Damai, Bedok North (holding site during rebuilding). Check the school's rebuilding page for the latest.
  • 🏫 Type & track: Government-aided, autonomous, all-boys Catholic SAP school; four-year O-Level track (Posting Group 3). Affiliated primary: Maris Stella High School (Primary), which admits girls from 2027 — the secondary section stays boys-only. Affiliated junior college: Catholic JC.
  • 📊 Jan 2026 posting score range: Posting Group 3: 4(M)–16 affiliated; 7(M)–12 non-affiliated. The school's FAQ confirms the two cut-offs ("AL 12 for non-affiliated students and AL 16 for affiliated students").
  • 🀄 Chinese focus: Chinese is the only Mother Tongue offered, and every student is offered Higher Chinese at Sec 1 (families indicate HCL or CL). One of the nine CLEP-Sec schools — CLEP students offer O-Level Literature in Chinese; the ten-year 走近 / 走进 bicultural programme; Chinese Orchestra and Chinese Language Drama & Debating as CCAs.
  • 🏮 Culture & recent events: Motto 勤 · 勉 · 忠 · 勇 (Diligence, Determination, Loyalty, Courage), with the Marist values of Presence, Simplicity, Family Spirit and Love of Work; open to boys of all faiths. MOE announced the rebuilding and the primary section's move to co-education on 6 May 2024.
  • 🎯 DSA talent areas linked to Chinese (2026 exercise): Chinese Language, Chinese Language Drama and Debating, and Chinese Orchestra (boys only).

5. West — Boon Lay and Clementi

Nan Hua High School 南华中学 — Clementi

Founded on 14 June 1917 by the overseas-Chinese educator Xiong Shangfu, originally as a girls' school, Nan Hua became the tenth SAP school in 2000. It is the SAP school with the most elaborately structured Chinese curriculum for ordinary students — a five-part programme called SAP@Nan Hua that every lower-secondary student goes through, not just a selected few — and the only one in the west with an O-Level track.

  • 📍 Location: 41 Clementi Avenue 1 — about 700 metres from Clementi MRT (East-West line); the school's directions suggest bus 189 from opposite Clementi Mall.
  • 🏫 Type & track: Government, co-ed, autonomous SAP school; O-Level track (Posting Group 3) only — no IP, no JC partner. Affiliated primary: Nan Hua Primary School.
  • 📊 Jan 2026 posting score range: Posting Group 3 (non-affiliated): 5(M)–10(M). SchoolFinder showed no separate affiliated range for this posting — if your child is in Nan Hua Primary, ask the school directly how affiliation applied in January 2026.
  • 🀄 Chinese focus: One of the nine CLEP-Sec schools. SAP@Nan Hua has five components: Appreciation of Chinese Culture (two years, lower secondary), Confucian Ethics, Translation & Interpretation, Contemporary China Studies, and a ten-week Sec 2 Bicultural Studies module comparing Chinese and Western literature. 早安南华 is a fortnightly Friday-morning Chinese-culture assembly with Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn celebrations and Confucian-knowledge quizzes. Higher Chinese is strongly encouraged for everyone who meets MOE's criteria. Its bicultural strand is school-run, not the MOE BSP-Sec.
  • 🏮 Culture & recent events: Motto 忠孝仁爱 · 礼义廉耻 — the Eight Virtues. Strong performing-arts and dance tradition; in 2025 its students took two Excellence awards at the Ngee Ann National Students' Calligraphy Competition and Gold and Silver in the lower-secondary individual category of the 8th National Text Recital Competition 全国课文朗诵比赛 (preliminary round).
  • 🎯 DSA talent areas linked to Chinese (2026 exercise): Chinese Drama, Chinese Orchestra, Chinese & Modern Dance, Guzheng Ensemble and Chinese Calligraphy; applicants must offer Higher Chinese or Chinese as Mother Tongue. No stand-alone "Chinese Language" area.

River Valley High School 立化中学 — Boon Lay

Singapore's first government Chinese middle school (1956), River Valley celebrated its 70th anniversary on 16 January 2026 with President Tharman as guest of honour; he praised the school for producing students with "cultural depth and flexibility". Integrated Programme only since 2006, and the one SAP school in the west where the Bicultural Studies Programme is available.

  • 📍 Location: 6 Boon Lay Avenue, Jurong West — Boon Lay MRT (East-West line) is the nearest station, with Lakeside also close.
  • 🏫 Type & track: Government-aided, autonomous (since 1994), co-ed SAP school; six-year Integrated Programme since 2006 leading to A-Levels at Year 6 — no O-Level track. No affiliated primary school listed on SchoolFinder.
  • 📊 Jan 2026 posting score range: IP: 4(M)–9(M). No affiliated range.
  • 🀄 Chinese focus: One of the six BSP-Sec schools — BSP is an elective anchored in Chinese Studies and Chinese culture with a global perspective; BSP students take Higher Chinese, do translation work and read classical and contemporary Chinese literature. Not one of the nine CLEP-Sec schools. Chinese Drama, Chinese Orchestra, Chinese Calligraphy & Painting and Chinese Dance as CCAs.
  • 🏮 Culture & recent events: Motto 立德立功 · 化愚化顽, drawn from the Confucian "three immortalities" 三不朽 and coined by one of its Chinese teachers. RV70 celebrations in January 2026; in 2025 students won a Silver and three Excellent awards at the Ngee Ann National Students' Calligraphy Competition and an Encouragement Award in the MOE/Zaobao Young Reporter News Challenge.
  • 🎯 DSA talent areas linked to Chinese (2026 exercise): Chinese Orchestra, Chinese Dance and Chinese Painting under Performing/Visual Arts (DSA-IP). No "Chinese Language" academic area; Chinese Drama was a 2025 area but is not on the 2026 list.

6. North-East — Sengkang

Nan Chiau High School 南侨中学 — Anchorvale, Sengkang

The newest SAP school (January 2012) and the only one in the north-east. MOE's designation cited its "good academic track record and strong Chinese traditions" and its role as a centre of learning for Chinese in the north. Founded in 1941 by Tan Kah Kee as a teachers' training school and run under the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan, its motto 诚毅 is the same one Tan Kah Kee gave Xiamen University and the Jimei schools.

  • 📍 Location: 20 Anchorvale Link, Sengkang, opposite Nan Chiau Primary — Tongkang and Renjong LRT stations are a few minutes' walk; Sengkang and Buangkok MRT about a kilometre.
  • 🏫 Type & track: Government-aided, co-ed SAP school under the Hokkien Huay Kuan; O-Level track (Posting Group 3) only — no IP, no JC partner. SchoolFinder shows a single (non-affiliated) range for this school; whether Nan Chiau Primary pupils receive affiliation priority is something to confirm on the live SchoolFinder page or with the school.
  • 📊 Jan 2026 posting score range: Posting Group 3: 4(M)–11(M). (For context, the previous year's posting was 5(D)–10.)
  • 🀄 Chinese focus: One of the nine CLEP-Sec schools — its dedicated CLEP Room was opened by Minister of State Sun Xueling in March 2021; a Bicultural Flagship Programme; the school states that all its students read Higher Chinese. Chinese Orchestra (about 80 members), Chinese Dance, Chinese calligraphy and Wushu as cultural CCAs.
  • 🏮 Culture & recent events: Motto 诚毅 — 诚以待人、毅以处事 (Sincerity and Perseverance). The Chinese Orchestra has earned the SYF Certificate of Distinction at every edition from 2015 to 2025; in 2025 its students took First Prize (poetry) in the 23rd National Secondary Schools Chinese Creative Writing Competition 新蕾奖, which the school co-organises with the Hokkien Huay Kuan and the Singapore Literature Society. The 75th anniversary in 2022 was marked with Minister Chan Chun Sing.
  • 🎯 DSA talent areas linked to Chinese (2026 exercise): Bilingualism, Chinese Dance (girls), Chinese Orchestra, and Wushu.

7. Choosing Between Them: Five Honest Questions

  • IP or O-Level? Four schools are IP-only (Hwa Chong, Nanyang Girls', Dunman High, River Valley) — six years, no O-Levels, and no O-Level checkpoint at Sec 4. Catholic High and St Nicholas offer both. Five are O-Level only (Anglican High, Chung Cheng Main, Maris Stella, Nan Hua, Nan Chiau), which keeps the JC/polytechnic decision open until 16.
  • Co-ed or single-sex? Six are co-ed; Hwa Chong, Catholic High and Maris Stella are boys' schools; Nanyang Girls' and St Nicholas are girls' schools.
  • How deep does the Chinese go? Every SAP school requires Chinese or Higher Chinese, but the upper-secondary doors differ: CLEP-Sec at eight of them (literature, immersion, scholarship), BSP-Sec at six (contemporary China, must offer HCL), both at three (Hwa Chong, Nanyang Girls', Dunman High); Catholic High, St Nicholas and River Valley run BSP only; Anglican High, Chung Cheng Main, Maris Stella, Nan Hua and Nan Chiau run CLEP only. If your child loves reading and writing Chinese, a CLEP school matters; if they are drawn to China–West affairs, a BSP school does.
  • Travel. A SAP school is a four- to six-year commitment with Chinese Orchestra or drama rehearsals that run late. Thirty minutes each way is sustainable; seventy is not, for most twelve-year-olds.
  • Affiliation. Affiliation only helps if the affiliated school is your child's FIRST choice, the child meets any extra criteria the school sets, and there are vacancies; since 2019 affiliated schools must keep at least 20% of places in each Posting Group for non-affiliated students. Notice how wide some affiliated ranges are (St Nicholas to 14, Maris Stella to 16) compared with the non-affiliated cut-offs — that is the affiliation effect, and it is real.

💡 One more thing about the (M) and (D)

Look again at the cut-offs. Most of the eleven non-affiliated cut-offs carry an HCL letter. In plain terms: at most SAP schools, the last few places in January 2026 were decided by Higher Chinese grades among students on the same PSLE Score. A child without HCL — or with a Pass where a Merit was needed — on exactly the cut-off score would not have been posted. If a SAP school is the goal, Higher Chinese in P5–P6 is not optional polish; it is the tie-break.

8. If Your Child Is in P5: The Chinese Score Is the One You Can Still Move

The eleven cut-offs above sit between 6 and 12. At that end of the scale every AL band is only five marks wide (AL2 is 85–89, AL3 is 80–84, AL4 is 75–79). Composition is 40 of the 200 marks in PSLE Chinese — one-fifth of the subject — so eight more composition marks is about four subject marks, which is most of a band. There is no equivalent lever in Maths: a child is either getting the questions right or not. In Chinese, a child who learns to expand a thin sentence into a vivid one, to open with 凤头 and close with 豹尾, and to stop losing marks to 错别字, moves up a band in a year of weekly practice.

That is also what the HCL letters reward. From the 2026 Sec 1 cohort, MOE lets students with AL1 or AL2 in Chinese (or Distinction/Merit in Higher Chinese) take Higher Chinese at Sec 1 regardless of their overall PSLE Score; SAP schools have traditionally allowed a wider gate still — check the school's own Sec 1 registration circular for the current wording. Either way, the child who writes well in P5 is the child with the HCL Merit at P6.

P5 parents: the P5 12-week composition plan is free. One essay a week — type it or photograph the handwritten page — marked against the MOE rubric with the method, not just the mark, plus a short weekly parent report with the next prompt. Start this week, and by next September your child has written forty essays instead of four.

A note on accuracy

Every figure in this guide was compiled in early October 2026 from MOE's Secondary 1 posting pages, MOE SchoolFinder as mirrored by parent and tuition sites, and each school's own website and FAQ. Where sources disagreed we have said so in the card and given you the cut-off only. We have not put these schools in any order of merit, and we do not claim that any of them is "better" for Chinese — they are different, and the right one depends on your child. If you find an error, write to us and we will correct it.
