Question 1

How does the PSLE Chinese idiom quiz work?

Accepted Answer

The quiz shows a sentence with a blank and four 成语 options — exactly like PSLE Paper 2 Q13–15. Choose the idiom that best fits the context. After each answer you see the correct answer and its meaning. Tap "💡 老师讲解" for an AI explanation of the idiom's origin story, composition writing tips, and 1–2 related idioms to help you distinguish similar ones. At the end you get a score and a review of all the idioms you missed.

Question 2

How many 成语 idioms do I need to know for PSLE Chinese?

Accepted Answer

MOE does not publish an official fixed list, but examiners draw from a common pool of upper-primary idioms. Knowing 50–80 high-frequency 成语 covering key themes (emotions 情感, character 品格, perseverance 勤学, teamwork 合作) gives strong coverage. The psle.me Idiom Bank contains the most commonly tested PSLE-level 成语 with meaning, pinyin, and example sentences.

Question 3

How do I use 成语 effectively in a PSLE Chinese composition?

Accepted Answer

Use 成语 at emotionally charged moments in the story — not randomly. For example, 欣喜若狂 fits a moment of extreme joy; 忐忑不安 fits nervous anticipation before an exam or competition. Markers reward 成语 that are contextually appropriate. Using one or two well-placed idioms scores better than forcing in five awkward ones.

Question 4

What is the difference between 成语 and 词语 in PSLE Chinese?

Accepted Answer

成语 (chéngyǔ) are four-character idiomatic expressions rooted in classical Chinese stories or imagery, e.g., 半途而废. 词语 (cíyǔ) is the broader term for vocabulary words, including two-character compound words like 坚持 or 勤奋. Both appear in PSLE Paper 2, but 成语 questions (Q13–15) specifically test idiomatic usage in context.
