A child writes a lovely, vivid composition — and then the marked script comes back with a scatter of red circles: 「时侯」 for 「时候」, 「在见」 for 「再见」, 「自已」 for 「自己」. The child says, quite honestly, "I knew that one!" The frustrating truth is that most 错别字 are not things a child does not know. They are slips that nobody taught the child to catch.
Telling a child to "be more careful" does not work, because carefulness is not a skill with steps. A routine is. Here is a three-step one that takes about ten minutes a week and needs no app.
Why 错别字 are worth fixing
Composition is marked out of 40, split into content and language, and accuracy of the written language is part of what the language half looks at. I cannot tell you how many marks any single typo costs — that depends on the marker and the rubric, so please check the current marking information on the SEAB website. What I can say from tutoring is that typos are the cheapest weakness to fix: unlike plot or vocabulary, no new skill is needed, only a habit.
Step 1 — Sort each mistake by its cause
Different causes need different fixes, so when a mistake appears, ask which kind it is:
- 形近字 (look-alikes): 己 / 已, 辩 / 辫 / 辨, 辛 / 幸, 候 / 侯. The child's memory is blurry on one stroke. Fix: link each character to a word it belongs to (自己, 已经; 辩论, 辫子, 辨别; 辛苦, 幸福; 时候).
- 音近字 / 同音字 (sound-alikes): 在 / 再, 象 / 像. The child chose by sound, not meaning. Fix: attach the meaning (在家 = be at; 再见 = again; 印象 vs 好像).
- 的 / 地 / 得: all sound like "de", so the ear cannot help. Fix: check what comes next — 的 before a noun (美丽的花), 地 before a verb (高兴地跳起来), 得 after a verb before how it was done (跑得很快).
- Careless slips (a missing stroke or dot): the child knows it; the hand skipped it. Fix: Step 3, not more memorising.
Step 2 — Keep a tiny 错字本 (not a punishment)
Use one small notebook. For each mistake write three things on one line: the wrong form crossed out, the right form, and ONE word that uses it. For example: 「~~时侯~~ 时候 — 小时候」. Do not copy the character ten times; copying without thinking is where the slip came from in the first place.
- Write the line when you get a script back (two minutes).
- Once a week, cover the right column and test the child: say the word, child writes the character. Re-test only the ones that were wrong.
- Retire a line after the child has written it correctly on two different weeks. Over a term the notebook gets shorter, which children find genuinely encouraging.
💡 Keep it short and kind
Five to eight lines a week is plenty. A notebook with forty entries becomes a source of shame, and a child who feels ashamed of mistakes starts avoiding the characters they are unsure of, which makes writing less ambitious. The aim is a shorter list, not a perfect child.
Step 3 — A 3-minute read-aloud check at the end
Slips are found by reading, not by hoping. Leave the last few minutes of any timed practice for this, and teach the child to do it in a fixed order:
- Point at each character with the pencil tip and read it softly under the breath. Pointing slows the eye down enough to see a missing stroke.
- Pause at every 的 / 地 / 得 and ask: what comes next — noun, verb or description?
- Pause at every character from the child's own 错字本 list and check it against the notebook.
- If unsure whether a character is right, and a simpler word that the child is certain of says the same thing, use that word. Choosing a sentence you can write correctly is better than guessing.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Punishment copying. Writing a character twenty times trains the hand, not the choice between two look-alikes.
- Fixing it for the child. If you circle and correct every slip yourself, the child learns that someone else catches them.
- Checking for everything at once. Check typos in one pass and flow in another; one pass for both finds neither.
- Reading the essay silently and fast. The eye "auto-corrects" what it expects to see, so slips are invisible at speed.
On psle.me, the composition marker lists the 错别字 it finds in your child's essay as 「错 → 正」 pairs — a ready-made first draft for the 错字本. As with any AI, it can miss one or flag one wrongly, so please check against a dictionary or the teacher's correction before writing it into the notebook.

- Composition is marked out of 40, split into content and language: MOE/SEAB marking scheme for PSLE Chinese composition (check the current figures and rubric on seab.gov.sg; this post does not state how many marks a typo costs).
- Character and word usage (己/已, 辩/辫/辨, 辛/幸, 候, 在/再, 的/地/得) should be confirmed in a standard dictionary such as the 《现代汉语词典》 or the 《新华字典》.
- The 3-step routine, the 错字本 format and the read-aloud order are the author's own tutoring practice and are offered as suggestions, not an MOE requirement and not a promise of any result.
