Many children say the same thing after a listening practice: "I understood everything, but I still got it wrong." Usually the child followed the story but did not know what to listen for, so by the time the question arrived the detail had gone. Listening is a skill you can rehearse, and the rehearsal is a routine, not more hours of audio.
The routine I teach has three steps: 先看题 (preview the questions), 抓关键 (catch the key words while listening), 再核对 (check each option against what you heard). Do them in this order.
Step 1 — 先看题: use the quiet seconds before the audio
Before the recording starts, read the questions and options. For each question, underline the question word: 谁 (who), 什么时候 (when), 在哪里 (where), 为什么 (why), 多少 (how many), 怎么样 (how). This tells your ears which kind of information to hunt for. A child who knows that question 2 asks "when" is already listening for a time word.
| Question word | Listen for | Easy-to-miss trap |
|---|---|---|
| 谁 who | a name or a role (妈妈, 老师, 邻居) | two people mentioned; only one did the action |
| 什么时候 when | a time or a day (星期六, 下午三点) | a time that is mentioned, then changed |
| 在哪里 where | a place word (图书馆, 公园) | the place they planned vs the place they went |
| 为什么 why | a reason signal (因为, 由于, 所以) | the first reason given is not the real one |
| 多少 how many | a number | two numbers close together; one is the total, one is the part |
| 怎么样 how / how did they feel | a feeling or a description | a feeling that changes from start to end |
Step 2 — 抓关键: write three or four words, not sentences
While listening, jot only key words next to the question they belong to: a name, a number, a place, a turning word. Do not try to write what you hear. Pay special attention to turning words such as 但是, 可是 and 不过, because the speaker often says one thing, then corrects or reverses it. The answer usually sits after the turn.
Step 3 — 再核对: test every option against your key words
When you answer, do not pick the option that merely sounds familiar. Check each option against your notes and cross out the ones that contradict what you heard. Options often reuse words from the recording, so a familiar word is not proof of a correct answer.
A worked example (original short script)
Imagine you hear: "星期六早上,小华本来想和哥哥去公园放风筝,可是天空下起了雨,所以他们改去图书馆看书。哥哥借了三本书,小华借了两本。"
Question 1 — 小华和哥哥星期六去了哪里?
Step 1: this is a 在哪里 question, so listen for places. Step 2: two places are mentioned, 公园 (the plan) and 图书馆 (the real place), and the word 可是 signals the change. Step 3: the answer is the library. 公园 is the tempting wrong option because it was said first.
Question 2 — 两个孩子一共借了几本书?
Step 1: this is a 多少 question, so listen for numbers. Step 2: two numbers, 三 and 两. Step 3: the question asks for the total, so the answer is five, not three or two.
💡 The most common slip
Choosing the first place, time or reason the speaker mentions. Plans change in the middle of a recording. Wait for the turning word before you commit.
A 10-minute weekly routine
- Pick one short passage, no more.
- Before playing it, the child reads the questions and underlines each question word.
- Play it, and the child jots three or four key words per question, no full sentences.
- Answer, then cross out the wrong options and say aloud why each is wrong.
- For every miss, replay just that part and find the word they missed or the turn they did not notice.
Saying why a wrong option is wrong is the part children skip, and it is the part that builds the habit of checking instead of guessing by familiarity.
On psle.me, the listening practice has free passages with questions and answers, so your child can rehearse this routine without needing anything else.
Free: practise listening passages and check your answers.
