「这两个词我都见过,感觉都对。」 That is what many children say about a word-choice question. When two options look alike, guessing by feel is a coin toss. A short routine turns the guess into a decision.

Here is the three-check routine I use with my students: 看搭配 (what does the word usually go with?), 看褒贬 (is the tone positive, negative or neutral?), 看词义 (what exactly does the word mean?). Read the sentence first, then run the checks in this order and cross out options as you go.

Check 1 — 看搭配: what does the blank sit next to?

Look at the words immediately before and after the blank. Many Chinese words only go with certain partners. Say the phrase aloud with each option: the wrong one usually sounds odd even before you can explain why.

Check 2 — 看褒贬: is the tone right for the sentence?

Some words carry praise, others carry criticism, even when the actions look similar. Ask: is the writer approving of this person, or not? A word with the wrong tone fails even if the meaning is close.

Check 3 — 看词义: what exactly does each option mean?

If two options are still standing, say what each word means in your own words and put that meaning into the sentence. Pairs that children often mix up differ in one small idea, such as "found something that already existed" versus "made something new".

Three worked examples (original sentences)

Example 1 — collocation: 这位老师把班里的优良传统____下去。

Options: A. 发挥 B. 发扬 C. 发明 D. 发觉. Check 1: the object is 优良传统. We say 发扬优良传统, but we say 发挥作用 or 发挥才能. So the answer is B 发扬. 发明 and 发觉 do not go with 传统 at all.

Example 2 — tone: 虽然遇到很多困难,小美仍然____每天练习钢琴,终于通过了考试。

Options: A. 坚持 B. 固执 C. 固定 D. 坚强. Check 2: the sentence admires her effort, so we need a positive word. 固执 usually describes someone who will not change even when wrong, so the tone does not fit. 固定 means "fixed" and 坚强 describes a person, not an action. The answer is A 坚持.

Example 3 — meaning: 牛顿____了万有引力。

Options: A. 发明 B. 发现. Check 3: 发现 means to find something that was already there (a law of nature); 发明 means to create something new (a machine). Gravity was already at work, so the answer is B 发现.

💡 The most common slip

Choosing the word that sounds more "advanced". The right word is the one that fits the partner words, the tone and the meaning of this sentence, not the one that looks harder.

A 10-minute weekly routine

  1. Pick five word-choice questions, no more.
  2. For each one the child writes 搭 / 褒贬 / 义 next to the option they crossed out and which check removed it.
  3. Read the finished sentence aloud. If it sounds odd, go back to Check 1.
  4. Add every word the child got wrong to a small word notebook with one good sentence of their own.

On psle.me, the vocabulary tool has free practice questions with a teacher-style explanation after each answer, so your child can see which check would have caught the mistake.
