Your child reads the passage, nods, and says "I understand it." Then the open-ended questions come back with half the marks missing. The answer was in the passage; the child simply wrote something that was true but did not answer the question that was asked. That is a skill gap, not a reading gap, and it can be taught.
Here is the three-step method I use with my students: 找 (find the question's target), 引 (go back and mark the evidence), 说 (answer in a full sentence, in your own words). It works the same way for P4, P5 and P6.
Step 1 — 找: find what the question is really asking
Before touching the passage, circle the 题眼 (the key words) of the question and name its type. The question word tells you what kind of answer is wanted:
- 「为什么……?」 asks for a reason. The answer usually starts with 因为 and the reason is stated, or hinted, near the event.
表现出他是怎样的人?」 asks you to infer. The answer is a quality or feeling (e.g. 乐于助人, 体贴), supported by what the person did.
为什么?」 asks for your own view. Give the view, then a reason that is connected to the passage.
Step 2 — 引: go back and mark the evidence
Return to the passage and underline the one or two sentences that answer the question. Do not answer from memory. Children who answer from memory tend to write what they felt about the story instead of what the text says.
Step 3 — 说: answer in a full sentence, in your own words
Turn the evidence into an answer that repeats the question's key words and finishes the thought. Copying a whole paragraph is risky because it may include the answer but also a lot that is not the answer. Pick out the part that matches the question and say it in a complete sentence.
A worked example (an original mini-passage)
Original practice passage written for this post
Question 1:
找: reason question, so the answer starts with 因为. A weak answer would be 「因为他很好」, which is a judgement, not the reason the text gives.
Question 2: 「
找: an inference question, so name a quality. Notice the answer names the quality AND points to what he did.
Question 3:
找: another reason question, about a feeling.
A 10-minute weekly routine
- Pick one short passage and two open-ended questions only. Doing two carefully beats doing ten quickly.
- The child circles the 题眼 and writes the question type next to it (reason / infer / opinion) before looking at the passage.
- The child underlines the evidence, then writes the answer in a full sentence.
- Swap: you read the answer and ask, 「这句话回答了题目问的吗?」 If it answers a different question, ask the child to find the question word again.
💡 The most common slip
Answering the question the child wishes had been asked. If the question is 「为什么」 and the answer does not contain a reason, it is probably the wrong type of answer, however true the sentence is.
Practising on a variety of passages helps because the question types repeat even though the stories change. On psle.me, the comprehension tool has free practice passages, and some include open-ended questions that are marked point by point (踩点). The AI marking is a practice aid and can occasionally miss a valid alternative wording, so please compare with your child's teacher's expectations.
Free: practise a comprehension passage, then see the explanation with the evidence sentence quoted from the text.
