Ask a Primary 5 child to write about their grandmother and you often get: 「我的外婆很善良,她是一个很好的人。」 Every sentence is true, and none of it is her. A reader cannot picture her, and a marker has nothing specific to give credit to. The fix is not more 好词 — it is a process. This post gives a three-step one you can use at the kitchen table.

Step 1 — 抓特点: choose ONE trait

Most thin 写人 essays try to praise five things at once (kind, hardworking, patient, funny, loving). Ask your child: 「如果只能让读者记住这个人的一点,是哪一点?」 One trait, stated in a few words, becomes the thread of the whole essay. Specific beats general: 「嘴上爱唠叨,心里很关心人」 is more useful than 「善良」.

Step 2 — 选事例: one event that proves it

A trait is a claim; an event is the evidence. Pick one small, real moment rather than a list of everything the person ever did. Ask: 「哪一次让你最清楚地看到她是这样的人?」 A rainy afternoon, a missed bus, a bowl of soup left on the table — small and concrete is better than big and vague.

Step 3 — 写细节: let the reader see it

Now slow down the key moment and ask three questions, the same questions we use to expand any thin sentence: what did the person DO (动作), what did their FACE or EYES show (神态), and what did they SAY (语言)? Notice the difference:

Telling (names the trait)Showing (动作 / 神态 / 语言)
外婆很关心我。外婆把伞往我这边斜了又斜,自己的半边肩膀淋湿了,嘴里还不停地说:「慢点走,别着凉。」
爸爸很辛苦。爸爸脱下沾满汗水的外套,揉了揉发红的眼睛,却还是笑着问我:「今天作业难不难?」
老师很严格。老师皱着眉,用红笔在我的错字旁圈了又圈,轻声说:「再写一遍,这次看仔细。」

These sample sentences are my own and only show the pattern; your child should use details from a real person and a real moment. A child's own small detail (the green umbrella with the broken rib) is always more convincing than a borrowed phrase.

💡 Check the thread

After drafting, underline the trait sentence and the detail sentences. Do the details actually prove the trait? If the trait is 「爱唠叨却关心人」 but the event shows only cooking, add the line that shows the worry.

A worked example (short)

Trait: 外婆嘴上爱唠叨,心里很关心人. Event: she waits at the bus stop on a rainy afternoon. Draft: 「车还没停稳,我就看见外婆撑着那把旧伞站在站牌下。她一边把伞塞给我,一边念叨:『说了带伞,你偏不听!』可我注意到,她自己的鞋早已湿透了。」 One trait, one event, an action, a line of speech and a small observation. Notice there is no 「外婆很善良」 anywhere — the reader reaches that conclusion alone.

A 10-minute practice routine

  1. Pick a person your child knows well. Write the trait in one short phrase. (2 minutes)
  2. Choose one moment that shows it and say it aloud in three sentences. (2 minutes)
  3. Write the key moment with at least one 动作, one 神态 and one line of 语言. (5 minutes)
  4. Swap one telling sentence for a showing one. (1 minute)

Do this once a week with a different person — a grandparent, a coach, a neighbour — and the habit builds without writing a full essay each time. Combine it with the sentence-expansion questions in our earlier post to practise the same skill on single sentences.
