Aiyah, every year I see the same thing lah. Parents panicking, students cramming 成语 the night before, then wonder why the score never improve. After 18 years marking PSLE compositions, I going to share with you exactly what separates an AL1 essay from an average one. Can one — if you follow the right method.

First, Understand the MOE Marking Rubric

Your child's composition is marked out of 40 marks — split into two equal halves. Many parents don't realise this! Both dimensions are equally important.

DimensionChineseMarksWhat Markers Look For
Content内容20Story relevance, plot development, character emotions, detail & depth
Language语言20Vocabulary range, sentence variety, grammar accuracy, 成语 usage

💡 老师的话 (Teacher Says)

Most students score decently on Language (because tuition drills grammar) but lose marks on Content. A technically perfect essay with a boring, predictable plot will NOT get AL1. The story must engage the reader!

Tip 1: Master the 3-Act Story Structure (开头–发展–结尾)

Your essay must have a clear narrative arc. This is not just about having a beginning, middle, and end — it's about emotional progression. The character must change or learn something by the end.

  1. 开头 (Opening): Hook the reader immediately. Start with action, dialogue, or a striking image — not "那是一个晴朗的早晨" (that's a boring cliché, markers see this 50 times a day lah)
  2. 发展 (Development): Build tension or conflict. Show the character struggling, making mistakes, facing challenges. Use sensory details.
  3. 结尾 (Ending): Resolve the conflict AND show character growth. What did they learn? How did they change? A reflective ending scores very well for Content.

Tip 2: Use 成语 Strategically — Don't Anyhow Throw

Wah, I cannot tell you how many times I see students throw 成语 into sentences where they don't fit. This actually LOSES marks under Language! A 成语 used incorrectly is worse than not using one at all.

  • Aim for 2–3 well-placed 成语 per composition, not 10 forced ones
  • Make sure the context matches the meaning exactly
  • High-scoring 成语 for compositions: 舍己为人, 助人为乐, 废寝忘食, 迷途知返, 感激涕零
  • Practice by writing 3 original sentences per 成语 — not just memorising definitions

Tip 3: Show, Don't Tell — Use Sensory Details

This one is the biggest gap between average and excellent students. "She was very sad" is telling. "Her eyes turned red, and she bit her lip to stop herself from crying in front of everyone" — that is showing. In Chinese:

Weak version

她很伤心,哭了起来。(She was very sad and cried.)

Strong version (scores Content marks)

她的眼眶慢慢红了,泪水像断了线的珠子般滚落脸颊,她用力咬住嘴唇,却怎么也止不住那份委屈。(Her eyes slowly reddened; tears fell like beads from a broken string down her cheeks. She bit her lip hard, but could not hold back her grievance.)

Tip 4: Time Management During the Exam

Paper 1 gives you time for both 情境写作 (situational writing) and 作文 (composition). Don't spend too long on 情境写作 and then rush the composition — that's where the big marks are.

TaskRecommended Time
Read question, brainstorm story outline5–8 mins
情境写作 (Situational Writing)20–25 mins
作文 (Composition)40–45 mins
Review & correct errors5–7 mins

Tip 5: Avoid These Common Mistakes (I See Every Year)

⚠️ Common Mistakes That Lose Marks

1. Starting every story with weather description ("那是一个晴朗的早晨") — cliché, loses impact. 2. No proper ending — story just stops. Markers deduct Content marks for incomplete narratives. 3. Character has no name — "他" throughout. Give characters names, makes story feel real. 4. Too much dialogue, not enough action/description. 5. Wrong 成语 usage — double-check before writing!
