Every year, parents ask me: "老师, what topic will come out this year?" I cannot tell you that lah. But what I CAN tell you is that PSLE composition topics follow recognisable patterns — and if your child prepares correctly, they can handle ANY topic that appears.
How MOE Selects Composition Topics
PSLE topics revolve around universal human experiences: relationships, personal growth, overcoming challenges, helping others, and community. They are NOT trick questions. The challenge is in the storytelling, not the topic itself.
The Two Formats: 看图作文 vs 命题作文
| Format | Description | Challenge |
|---|---|---|
(Picture-based) | Given 3–4 sequential pictures showing a scene. Write a story based on them. | Must follow the pictures' sequence; can't go completely off-script |
(Title-based) | Given a title or theme (e.g. 一次难忘的经历). Write freely within that theme. | More freedom but also more responsibility to create a compelling plot |
Both formats test the SAME skills: narrative structure, emotional depth, vocabulary richness, and 成语 usage. Master storytelling, and the format does not matter.
Most Common PSLE Composition Themes (2020–2025)
Based on patterns across recent years, these themes appear most frequently. Your child should have at least ONE prepared story for each:
| Theme | Chinese | Example Topic | Key Emotions to Show |
|---|---|---|---|
The "Swiss Army Knife" Story Strategy
Here's my best tip: prepare ONE flexible story framework that can be adapted to multiple themes. The characters, setting, and emotional arc stay the same — only the specific conflict changes. This saves time during the exam and ensures your child always has a strong story.
- Choose a consistent protagonist: e.g. 明轩, a P6 student. Give him/her a personality and a flaw to overcome.
- Use a flexible setting: school, neighbourhood, or a community event works for almost all themes.
- Have 2 prepared emotional arcs: one for "helping/connecting" themes, one for "personal growth/challenge" themes.
What About 看图作文 Specifically?
- Spend 2–3 minutes studying ALL pictures before writing — understand the full story arc first
- Add details the pictures do not show: inner thoughts, dialogue, sensory details — this is where marks are won
- Don't just describe what you see. Interpret and expand.
- Ensure each picture gets roughly equal coverage in the essay
