「他高兴( )跳了起来。」 Many children fill in 的 because it is the one they see most often. 的、地、得 all sound the same (de), so listening will not help; what helps is a tiny habit of checking what sits next to the blank. This post gives a method your child can use in a few seconds, and a way to practise it at home.
The rule in one line
Look at the word AFTER the blank, then at the word BEFORE it. 的 joins a describing word to a NOUN (what kind of?). 地 joins a describing word to a VERB (how does it happen?). 得 comes AFTER a verb or adjective and introduces how well, how much or how far (the result).
| Particle | Ask this question | Pattern | Original example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 的 | 这是在说「什么样的」东西? | 描述 + 的 + 名词 | 明亮的教室、妈妈做的汤 |
| 地 | 这是在说动作「怎么样」做? | 描述 + 地 + 动词 | 轻轻地推开门、认真地听讲 |
| 得 | 这是在说动作做得「怎么样/到什么程度」? | 动词/形容词 + 得 + 结果 | 跑得很快、高兴得跳了起来 |
Step 1 — 看后面: what comes after the blank?
If a noun follows (教室、汤、小狗), try 的. If a verb follows (推开、听讲、走), try 地. This first look settles most sentences: 「他( )笑容很灿烂」 is followed by a noun, so 他的笑容; 「他( )笑了笑」 is followed by a verb, so 他轻轻地笑了笑 if a describing word comes before the blank.
Step 2 — 看前面: what comes before the blank?
If the blank follows a verb or adjective AND what comes after tells us the result or degree, use 得. 「他跑( )很快」: 跑 is a verb and 很快 describes how the running went, so 跑得很快. Quick test: can the part after the blank be read as an answer to 「跑得怎么样?」 If yes, it is 得.
💡 The two-question check
Question 1: after the blank, is there a noun (的) or a verb (地)? Question 2: before the blank, is there a verb or adjective, and does what follows say how well or how much it happened (得)? Say the answer out loud with the full phrase, not just the particle.
Three worked examples (original)
- 「小明( )书包很重。」 After the blank: 书包 is a noun → 小明的书包很重.
- 「小明认真( )写作业。」 After the blank: 写 is a verb, and 认真 describes how he writes → 小明认真地写作业.
- 「小明写( )很认真。」 Before the blank: 写 is a verb, and 很认真 says how well it was done → 小明写得很认真.
Notice the last two use the same words but a different structure: 认真地写 (the manner comes before the verb) versus 写得很认真 (the result comes after the verb). If your child sees which side the describing word is on, the choice becomes clear.
Where it goes wrong
Two traps appear again and again. First, a long phrase before the blank can hide the verb, so ask your child to find the single word right next to the blank and decide from that. Second, a few expressions are fixed and can be learned as chunks, for example 的确 and 似的. For anything unusual, check a standard dictionary or the school's course materials instead of guessing.
A 10-minute practice routine
- Parent writes 6 short sentences with the blank, mixing 的、地、得. (2 minutes)
- Child circles the word after the blank, then the word before it. (2 minutes)
- Child fills in the particle and reads the whole phrase aloud. (3 minutes)
- Swap roles: the child writes 3 blanks for the parent to solve. Writing a good blank is harder than solving one. (3 minutes)
In compositions, the same habit helps your child's own writing: when they write 「他慢慢( )走过来」, they can check the particle in the same way, because the checking process is the same as in a fill-in.
