Most children fix a wrong answer the moment the answer is shown, then never see the question again. A few weeks later the same slip returns: the same 的/得 confusion, the same idiom used for the wrong feeling, the same character written with the wrong component. A 错题本 (mistake notebook) is the simple habit that breaks that loop. This post gives a version that takes about ten minutes, three times a week, and that a parent with limited Chinese can supervise.

Why copying the right answer does not work

Copying the correct answer trains the hand, not the thinking. What a child needs to keep is the reason for the mistake: 'I did not look at the word after the blank', 'I mixed up two similar characters', 'I picked the idiom because I knew it, not because it fit'. Without the reason written down, the next similar question looks brand new.

The notebook: four columns, no decoration

  • 题目 (the question, or the sentence with the blank) — copy only the part you need.
  • 我的答案 → 正确答案 — both, side by side.
  • 为什么错 — one honest line in the child's own words. This is the most important column.
  • 下次怎么做 — one concrete action, for example 'check the word after the blank first' or 'say the sentence aloud with each option'.

A plain exercise book is enough. Resist colour-coding and beautiful layouts; the value is in the 'why' column, not the neatness.

Sort the mistakes by cause, not by subject

After two weeks, ask the child to put a tick against each mistake in one of four groups: 没看清题 (misread), 不会 (did not know), 混淆 (confused two similar things), 粗心 (careless slip). The groups tell you what to practise. Misreads need a slower first read; 'did not know' needs the item learned properly; confusions need the two items compared side by side; carelessness usually needs a short checking routine at the end, not more drills.

An original worked example

Suppose a child wrote 「他很高兴地哭了」 as a sentence of their own and the teacher circled it, or chose the wrong option in a word-choice question. Copying the correct version is not enough. A useful entry reads: 'I picked the word that I knew best, without checking the word after the blank. Next time I will read the whole sentence first and ask what the writer feels.' The child has written down a process, so the entry helps with the next question of the same kind. Always confirm word distinctions in a standard dictionary or with the school teacher rather than trusting memory.

A 10-minute routine, three times a week

  • 2 minutes: write today's mistakes into the four columns, with the 'why' line done by the child first.
  • 3 minutes: the child covers the answer column and redoes three older entries from last week.
  • 3 minutes: say the corrected sentence or idiom aloud, then make one new sentence of their own.
  • 2 minutes: tick any entry that has now been right twice in a row; those can rest for a month.

Redoing old entries after a gap is the part that makes the notebook work. A mistake you can answer correctly a week later, without looking, is one you have actually fixed. Keep the ticks honest: if the child needs to peek, the entry stays active.

What a parent can do without reading Chinese

Ask three questions and listen: 「你为什么选这个?」 「错在哪一步?」 「下次你会先做什么?」 If the child can answer the third question in one sentence, the entry is finished. If not, the 'why' line is still too vague. You are checking the thinking, not the Chinese.

Practise a few vocabulary questions, and note down what you got wrong and why.
