Many children do their 朗读 (reading a Chinese passage aloud) at one speed, one volume and one tone, as if every word were equally important. They are not decoding badly; they simply have not been shown that reading aloud is a set of small choices. This post gives a three-step method (断句, 重音, 语气) and a 10-minute routine that a parent can run at home during the holidays, even if the parent's own Chinese is limited.
Why 'just read it again' does not help
- Repeating the same flat reading five times only makes the flat reading more fluent.
- The child does not know what to change, so there is nothing to improve between attempts.
- Fast reading hides unfamiliar characters; the child guesses instead of checking.
The three steps: 断句 → 重音 → 语气
| Step | What the child decides | Original example |
|---|---|---|
| 断句 Pause | Where does the sentence breathe? Mark a short slash at each natural pause and a long slash at the end. | 「雨停了 / 小明推开窗 / 一股泥土的味道 / 扑面而来。」 |
| 重音 Stress | Which one or two words carry the meaning? Underline them and say them a little slower or louder. | 「他 终于 站起来了。」 stress 「终于」 to show how long he waited. |
| 语气 Feeling | What is the speaker feeling: worried, excited, calm, proud? Choose the voice before reading. | 「你真的来了!」 can be surprised or relieved, so the child decides which. |
Step 1 — 断句: let the meaning set the pauses
Punctuation is a start, not the whole answer. A long sentence with few commas still needs a breath in the middle. Ask your child to read the sentence as if telling a friend the news, then mark where they naturally paused. The test is simple: a pause should never split a word or a phrase that belongs together. For example, 「妈妈 / 做的红烧鱼」 is fine, while 「妈妈做 / 的红烧鱼」 is not.
Step 2 — 重音: find the one word that matters
Ask: if I could only say one word louder, which would carry the meaning? Different answers change the sentence. In 「我昨天一个人走回家」, stressing 「一个人」 suggests loneliness, while stressing 「昨天」 contrasts with other days. Let the child choose and explain; there is often more than one good choice, and the explaining is the learning.
Step 3 — 语气: choose the voice before the first word
Before reading, the child names the feeling in two characters: 「紧张」「高兴」「平静」. Then they read once with that voice. A quick check from a parent works well even without strong Chinese: 「听起来像是什么心情?」 If the answer matches the name, the voice is working.
⚠️ Check unfamiliar characters first
Before practising expression, make sure every character can be read correctly. Look up any doubtful character or pinyin in a standard dictionary such as 《现代汉语词典》 or use the school's materials. Expression on top of a wrong reading only fixes the mistake in memory.
A 10-minute routine
- 2 minutes: pick a short paragraph (about 4–6 sentences) from a book or a school text and check every character.
- 3 minutes: mark pauses, underline stress words and write one feeling word at the top.
- 2 minutes: record the first reading on a phone.
- 3 minutes: listen back together, change ONE thing, and record again.
Change one thing at a time: pauses on Monday, stress on Wednesday, feeling on Friday. Listening to their own recording is often the moment a child hears what the marks were for. The parent's role is a question rather than a verdict: 「你这一句想让我听出什么?」 This habit also feeds directly into writing, because a child who hears where a sentence breathes usually punctuates better in a composition.
After reading aloud, try putting a feeling into your own writing and see what to expand next.
