A common 听写 routine at home: the parent reads ten words, the child writes, the parent marks the wrong ones in red, and everyone moves on. The following week the same words go wrong again. The problem is rarely effort. The routine ends exactly where the learning should begin, which is after the mistake.

Here is a four-step routine that keeps the same 10 minutes but makes the wrong words stick: 听、写、改、隔天再测.

Step 1 — 听: say it back and know what it means

Read each word twice at a natural speed, then give a short phrase ("再见的再"). Ask the child to repeat the word aloud before writing. Many dictation errors are really hearing or meaning errors: the child heard a sound but did not know which word it was. Do not read stroke by stroke; that tests nothing the child will face when writing a composition.

Step 2 — 写: circle the words you are unsure of

While writing, the child draws a small circle beside any word they are not sure about, even if they write it correctly. This is useful information: a correct but uncertain word is a word that may go wrong next time. It also teaches the child to notice what they do not know, which is a habit worth building.

Step 3 — 改: fix from memory, not by copying

For each wrong or circled word, first work out why it went wrong. Most mistakes fall into a few types:

Type of errorWhat happenedExample
同音字 (same sound)Right sound, wrong character再 (again) written as 在 (at)
形近字 (similar shape)Two characters look alike已 (yǐ) written as 己 (jǐ)
意思混淆 (meaning mix-up)Child knows both, picks the wrong one印象 (impression) vs 好像 (seems): 象 and 像
少笔/多笔 (missing or extra stroke)The shape is almost rightA stroke dropped when writing quickly

Then the child writes the correct word once while looking, covers it, and writes it twice more from memory, saying a phrase each time ("已经的已"). Copying the word five times without looking trains the hand, not the memory. Write the word on a small card or in an 错字本 with the reason for the error beside it.

💡 Check a word before you teach it

If you are not sure of a character or word, check a standard dictionary or your child's school word list rather than relying on memory. A wrong correction at home is harder to undo than a wrong answer.

Step 4 — 隔天再测: the words that went wrong come back tomorrow

Next day, before the new list, test only the words that went wrong or were circled. Test them again after about a week. A word that is correct on the first retest and the second can leave the card pile. A word that is wrong again stays and gets a new look at why: perhaps a story or a phrase would help it stick. This spacing is what turns a one-evening fix into something that lasts.

⚠️ Keep the list short

Ten words, not thirty. A long list ends in tired guessing and a child who dreads dictation. A short list done with all four steps beats a long list done fast.

A 10-minute routine

  1. Read 8–10 words twice each, with a short phrase. (3 minutes)
  2. The child writes and circles any unsure word. (3 minutes)
  3. Mark together; for each miss or circle, name the error type from the table. (2 minutes)
  4. Fix from memory once or twice and add the word to the 错字本. (2 minutes)
  5. Next day: retest only the missed words first.

Mark together instead of marking alone. A child who sees why a word went wrong learns more in 30 seconds than from a page of red ticks and crosses.

On psle.me the 听写 practice plays each word aloud and lets the child type the answer. Words they miss are saved so the 错题本 can bring them back later, which is the same "come back tomorrow" idea without the parent having to keep the list.
